Missouri Compromise--this line at 36-30 stated all areas south of the line could have slavery and those areas north would be free of slavery.

The Missouri Compromise meant to deal with concerns of imbalance in Congress regarding slavery. States would come into the Union in pairs or sequence to maintain balance. Missouri entered as a slave state and Maine as a free state under this compromise.
