Economic mercantilism is when a country which has some sort of power over another tells them they can only trade with the strong power, that way the strong power enriches itself, but the subdued country does not gain financially, and the strong power's enemies do not enrich themselves either. This was the case with Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies.
