Yes, in the Industrial Revolution, people built factories near rivers, and lakes, so they could power their machines. They had those wheels that carried water up and down like a Ferris Wheel, (I can't think of the name) and that wheel turning powered everything they needed, from Cotton Gins, to sewing machines.
