X + 2Y = 14
X + Y = 31

Subtract

  X + 2Y = 14
- X +   Y = 31
---------------------
          Y  =  -17

Plug Y into the simplest equation

X + Y = 31
X + (-17) = 31
X - 17 = 31 (Add 17)
X = 48
