-5+|9-11|
first, you would find the absolute value
|9-11|= |-2|=2
then the problem looks like this
-5+2= -3
So, the answer is negative three

You MUST perform the operation 9-11 first, since it's between the vertical "absolute value" lines:  |9-11].     Thus, |9-11] comes out as |-2|, which is equal to 2 ("the absolute value of -2 is positive 2").

Thus, -5 + |9-11|  =  -5 + 2  = -3 (answer)
