The correct option is this: THE HEAT ENERGY IS USED TO OVERCOME THE INTER MOLECULAR FORCES BETWEEN MOLECULES.
When heat is applied to a substance, the heat raised the temperature of the substance and allows the particles in the substance to move faster. During phase change, the temperature of the substance remain constant and the heat energy supplied is use to overcome the molecular forces that are holding the particles of the substance together.
