If you're talking about the story "Hamlet" then its probably because William Shakespeare was foreshadowing on what'll possibly happen later by giving it to Hamlet and find out about the truthfulness

Shakespeare introduced a troupe of traveling players into the action of the play because, he is foreshadowing what will happen next giving an idea to Hamlet about how to find out the truth.
