What did the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki do?

The bombing, apart from killing a great amout of people, and causing diseases, such as cancer to others, has shown Japan the power of US and quickened the acceptance of defeat by the Japanese, possibly saving many more lives, which would be lost if the war continued.
