it's a frozen wasteland. nothing can grow there. the conditions are to harsh to survive

The freezing temperatures prevents most. Frozen ground, very little sunlight, and lack of flowing water (can't benefit from water that does not melt). There's not a long enough growing season for any large flora to be present.
