The rise of the middle class in ancient Greece helped to shape the modern concept of democracy because it provided an area where the majority of citizens lived (or the majority of the population), but since they were not of the upper class, they still had no say in the government; and, as always results from these circumstances, the options were either face revolution (similar to the Reign of Terror) or change how the system works.
