This equation explains the loss or gain of heat in a system (Q) given a sample mass (m), specific heat (c) and the change in temperature. A positive Q implies the system is absorbing heat (feels cold to the touch), or endothermic. A negative Q implies the system is giving off heat (feels hot to the touch), exothermic.
