The nurse should Instruct the client to advance the cane 4 to 12 in (10 to 30 cm) and then to advance the weaker foot forward, parallel to the cane, while maintaining balance on the stronger leg and the cane.

  • The client should hold the cane with your stronger (or uninjured) side facing forward.
  • Verify that the top of the cane touches the crease in the  wrist by standing up straight. The elbow should be slightly bent while they grip your cane.

  • Next, take the cane and the weaker leg to the same step. Take it gradually and one step at a time.
