Alma Rivera - the Housewife from Patzcuaro, Mexico and Mayor Toro.

Who is Mayor Toro?

Mayor Toro is a teenage social outcast and a first generation American whose parents where from Panama orgininally.

Hence, Toro's background affects his sense of identity in his narratives. The major theme of the book is that of hope or longing for a better life.
