In his conversation with the hotel clerk, Jimmy learns there is no shoe store in town. Owning a shoe store is the perfect "fit" for Jimmy because he used to make shoes in prison.
He was in jail for a while where he made shoes for a living, as many prisoners have some jobs in prison. When he left it, however, it was only natural for him to continue the job as he had gotten got at it.
