Explanation:

From the question we are told that

  The distance of the car to north is  d =  10 km

   The distance of car to the west is  w =  - 10 \  km

The negative sign is because the direction is  west

Generally applying Pythagoras theorem , the displacement is  

         [tex]H = \sqrt{d^2 + w^2}[/tex]

=>      [tex]H = \sqrt{(10)^2 + (-10)^2}[/tex]

=>     [tex]H = 14.14 \ km[/tex]
