By creating three branches of government, the founding fathers wanted to make sure that no part of the government had too much authority. The three branches interact in a system of checks and balances, meaning they have the power to, in a way, supervise and restrict what is done by the others. This is what guarantees people's safety from excessive authority by any branch's member.
