First you have to distribute. -3y +12=18.  -3y=6. y= -2.

first divide -3 by both sides.  so then you will have (y-4)= -6 then you take the parenthesis away. y-4=-6 Now you add 4 to each side because addition is the opposite of subtraction. y= -6 + 4 which then becomes y= -2
