I’m not sure about the wording of the question, but wouldn’t it be all real numbers?

If you choose [tex] b=0 [/tex] the equation becomes

[tex] x^2-ax = 0 \iff x(x-a) = 0 [/tex]

which always has solutions [tex] x=0,\ x=a [/tex]
