In any right triangle with sides a,b and hypotenuse c, the pythagorean theorem states that

[tex] a^2+b^2=c^2 [/tex]

So, we have

[tex] c^2 = a^2+b^2=7^2+7^2 = 49+49=98 [/tex]

Which means that

[tex] c=\sqrt{98} [/tex]

If you ask any calculator, you'll get something like

[tex] \sqrt{98} \approx 9.8994949\ldots [/tex]

So, since the thousandth digit is a 9, the approximation to the nearest hundredth is 9.90.
