We are given: a mountain descends (getting down vertically) = 100 meter.

For getting down we would take it by a negative number so it would be -100 meter.

And every horizontal distance  = 1,000 meter.

We know formula for slope is = Change in vertical distance/ Change in Horizontal distance.

Plugging values in formula of slope above, we get

Slope = -100/1000 = -1/10 or -0.1.

Therefore, we could say the slope of a mountain is [tex]-\frac{1}{10}\ or \ -0.1.[/tex]
