The sounds t, th, and sh are "phonemes".

 Phonemes are considered as the most essential units of speech sounds. For instance, the "mmm" sound toward the finish of Tom is a phoneme. When we show understanding we show youngsters which letters speak to those sounds. For instance – the word 'cap' has 3 phonemes – 'c' 'a' and 'p'.
