The answer is Martin Luther.  Apart from commissioning simple tunes for the Church.  He also founded the Lutheran Church and also translated the Bible into German making it possible for Germans to read and understand the Bible.  He spoke out against many of the flaws of the Roman Catholic Church especially indulgences.
